Open Post: Hosted By Tom Ford Dragging People Who Turned The Met Gala Into A “Costume Party”

April 28, 2022 / Posted by: Allison

The Met Gala returned last September after a two-hear hiatus caused by COVID-19. But this year’s Met Gala is returning to its traditional date of the first Monday in May, so it’s a big triumphant return for fashion types, style vanguards, or those who just love an over-the-top spectacle. That last part isn’t exactly Tom Ford’s favorite aspect of the Met Gala, as he recently shared that he hate hate HATES the way some people have turned the Met Gala into something that looks like it’s sponsored in part by Spirit Halloween.

The theme of this year’s Met Gala is In America: An Anthology of Fashionor better known by its snazzier nickname, Gilded Glamor. Tom Ford is an honorary chair of the gala, and he’s quoted in a recently-released biography by Amy Odell on Anna Wintourtitled Anna. Page Six says that in it, Tom gave his unfiltered opinion, as he has been known to do, to discuss the current state of the Met Gala. Tom doesn’t want to see your tacky come-to-life cartoon looks!

“It’s turned into a costume party…That used to just be very chic people wearing very beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century. You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier .”

Tom Ford doesn’t explicitly call anyone out by name, but then again, he doesn’t exactly have to, since a quick internet search for “Met Gala burger“will point you in exactly one direction. The person who “didn’t have to dress like a hamburger” gold “a candlestick” is clearly a reference to Katy Perrywho showed up to the 2019 Met Gala trying her best to represent the theme Notes on ‘Camp’ by wearing a literal battery-powered light-up chandelier before changing into a hamburger costume. And the crack about not being able to sit down in the car on the way over could be a reference to Kim Kardashianwho explained she could barely sit in a chair in her custom-made corset for the 2019 Met Gala.

With Tom’s comments being what they are, I’m sure there are more than a few famous types who are panicking right now, wondering if their outfits for Monday’s gala are too costume-y. Except for Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian. They both love the attention they get from the Met Gala so much that I bet they took Tom’s slander as a challenge. They’re going to get so costume-y this Monday, that he’ll have to choice but to call them out by name next time he drags the Met Gala’s most shameless stunt looks.
