Coral Springs High School graduate Kachina Daniel is making her mark in the fashion industry.
Currently studying fashion design in Atlanta at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Daniel, 23, received Virgil Abloh’s “Post-Modern” scholarship at the Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) awards gala in New York City on April 11.
Abloh, a fashion icon known for his work with Louis Vuitton and Off-White, launched the scholarship fund in 2020 to “Support the Next Generation of Black Fashion Industry Leaders” before his death in 2021.
Out of thousands of students, Daniel was one of just 23 recipients selected by a panel of industry icons representing major brands and designers.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for me,” said Daniel, who was the first in her family to pursue a creative path.
“I come from a Haitian family, where almost everyone is in the medical field,” she said. Her mother and aunts are all nurses, and she just assumed she would follow in their footsteps.
“I was always into dressing up, styling hair, and make-up,” said Daniel. But, she never saw it as a career. During her senior year at Coral Springs High School, a teacher asked if she was going to pursue fashion, and Daniel responded, “Maybe after I become a pediatrician.”
It wasn’t until her first semester of college that she decided to follow her passion. After looking at schools, she found out about SCAD and immediately fell in love with it.
To enter the scholarship competition, Daniel, who graduates in June, completed a case study presenting a solution to an issue in the fashion industry. Hers was a collaboration with H&M and Chanel, aimed at people who want to travel and wear luxury but cannot yet afford it.
Daniel receives $7,500, a paid summer internship, a master class program for professional development, and mentorship from industry leaders.
She said it boosted her confidence that she now has the skills to be acknowledged by such a prestigious award.
As for the future, she sees herself in Paris, working under a luxury brand, and gaining some expertise and skills. Then she’d like her own label of luxury garments for confident men and women who love to stand out and be different.
